Frog is a small, fast wetland amphibian of content management system software. Aptly-named, it’s small, fast and perfect for users who aren’t afraid of a little design and development. It’s good for building your own site as well as sites for clients. The learning curve doesn’t force you to understand PHP, but it does behoove you to pay attention and expand your PHP horizons.
Frog CMS began as a PHP offshoot of Ruby On Rails’ Radiant CMS. But now it’s called Frog. It is no-frills and has a very streamlined set of features.
Standout applications include:
Built-in applications are sparse with Frog CMS. The whole point of Frog seems to be simplicity in code, features and practice.
The features it does have begin with Pages. It’s a hierarchical design, from home page to about page to articles and beyond. All the pages are easy to move around. “Snippets” are little components of code that can be inserted anywhere in the system that flexibility is needed. It has a built-in file manager but no real mechanism for using images on your pages.
Anything beyond basic functionality shown on our side-by-side matrix for Frog CMS will have to be added as a plugin.
Themes are called layouts here.
Granular privileges are the only built-in here, but it’s a good one to have. This means you can create groups, assign users and designate user levels from a menu in your admin panel. This makes the delegation of work to less-skilled users just as easy as assigning your more technical work.
Default administration options come with two tabs: plugins and settings. Plugins tab includes a menu of any installed plugins, the latest installed version and a check box to enable/disable it.
The settings tab will reveal admin themes (you can choose from two), 20 language options, admin site title and default tab options.
When/if your site begins receiving comments, a comments tab will be added to this admin panel.
Frog does not offer commerce-oriented plugins or features.
Drag and drop content is a great feature that is built-in to frog. It saves time and is fun to use. Image resizing can be done automatically when you add the free plugin. This is a time saver because it means you don’t have to leave your CMS to resize images.
